Benefits & Outcomes

Adolescent-Specific Expertise

Teen depression often presents differently than adult depression. Our psychiatrists understand the developmental context—peer relationships, academic pressure, identity formation—and assess risk with specialized tools designed for this age group.

Suicide Risk Management

Every evaluation includes thorough suicidality screening and creation of a safety plan. We provide families with warning signs, crisis resources, and clear escalation pathways if risk increases.

Family-Centered Treatment Planning

Parents are essential partners. We educate families on depression in teens, medication options, and how to support their child's recovery while recognizing the teen's growing autonomy.

School and Therapy Integration

We liaise with school counselors to support IEPs or 504 plans and ensure therapy and medication management work together toward shared goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for teenagers to feel sad sometimes?▾

Yes. Teens experience mood fluctuations due to hormones, stress, and development. Clinical depression is different: persistent sadness or irritability lasting weeks, loss of interest in activities, sleep or appetite changes, and functional impairment at school or home. Our evaluation determines whether symptoms meet depression criteria.

Are antidepressants safe for teenagers?▾

SSRIs are FDA-approved for adolescent depression and have been extensively studied. We monitor teens closely, especially in the first weeks, for any mood or behavioral changes. Benefits typically outweigh risks when depression is moderate to severe.

How do I know if my teen is suicidal?▾

Warning signs include talking about death or hopelessness, giving away possessions, social withdrawal, and increased risk-taking. Every depression evaluation includes suicide screening. If your teen expresses suicidal thoughts, call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or go to the nearest ER.

Can therapy alone treat teen depression?▾

Therapy is highly effective for mild to moderate depression. For moderate to severe depression, the combination of therapy and medication often works best. We assess severity and recommend the appropriate level of care.
