Benefits & Outcomes

Clarity on Uncertain or Conflicting Diagnoses

If you've received different diagnoses from different clinicians, or if your diagnosis has never felt quite right, a second opinion provides clarity and a clear rationale for a specific diagnostic formulation.

Validation or Alternative Perspective on Treatment

If recommended medication or therapy didn't work or caused side effects, a second opinion explores whether the diagnosis was correct or whether a different treatment approach might be better.

Peace of Mind

Mental health diagnosis can feel high-stakes. A second opinion from an independent psychiatrist can confirm your diagnosis and instill confidence in your treatment plan—or identify a better path.

Empowerment in Treatment Decisions

An informed second opinion gives you confidence to advocate for your own care, ask better questions, or feel comfortable moving forward with a treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a psychiatric second opinion helpful?▾

Consider a second opinion if: your diagnosis has changed multiple times, recommended treatment didn't work or caused side effects, you've had a bad experience with a prior psychiatrist, your symptoms don't match the diagnosis you were given, or you simply want confirmation before starting a major treatment.

Should I tell the second-opinion psychiatrist about my prior diagnosis?▾

Yes. Tell us about prior evaluations and diagnoses, but we'll also conduct our own independent assessment before discussing what you've heard before. This allows us to form an unbiased opinion first.

What if the second-opinion psychiatrist disagrees with my prior diagnosis?▾

This happens, and it's not uncommon. We'll explain our reasoning clearly, discuss why we see things differently, and explore what that means for your treatment. You can then discuss the disagreement with your prior psychiatrist or choose to pursue the second opinion clinician's recommendations.

Will a second opinion interfere with my current psychiatrist's care?▾

A second opinion is separate and independent. Your current psychiatrist doesn't need to know about it unless you choose to share the opinion with them. You can share our written second-opinion summary with your current psychiatrist if you wish.

Do I need to bring all my prior records for a second opinion?▾

Bring what you have. We'll request prior psychiatric records with your permission. Even if records are incomplete, we can still conduct a thorough independent evaluation based on your current history and symptoms.
